Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro: Specifications and Features

0 1,194

Xiaomi introduced the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India on February 14. While the Pro is an entirely new offering for our market, the Redmi Note 5 is, in fact, the rebranded Redmi 5 Plus. We believe Xiaomi chose to launch the 5 Plus as the Note 5 in India so as to present it as obvious smaller sibling to the Note 5 Pro.

PRICE, SPECS and FEATURES

Launched at a starting price of Rs 9,999, the Redmi Note 5 is essentially the Redmi 5 Plus which is sold in its native Chinese market. The most prominent visual feature of the handset is its full-screen display with the 18:9 aspect ratio. The screen size is 5.99 inches and it is an IPS LCD unit which delivers a Full HD resolution (1080p x 2160p). It is a 2.5D glass and protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass.

Powered by a generous 4,000mAh battery, the Redmi Note 5 runs the Android Nougat along with Xiaomi’s own customization of MIUI 9. There is no word when or if the handset will get the Android Oreo. Also, while the battery life should be good, it doesn’t support fast charging. The performance is delivered by the Snapdragon 625 processor with either 3 GB or 4 GB RAM and 32 GB or 64 GB internal storage respectively. Gaming duties are handled by the Adreno 506.

CAMERA

As far as the camera is concerned, there’s a single-lens 12 megapixel camera at the back with an aperture of f2.2. Other important camera features are Phase Detection Autofocus, dual LED flash, low light enhancement, HDR and Panorama. On the front, there’s a 5 megapixel unit for capturing decent selfies.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, is a more up-market device of the two. It’s launched at a starting price of Rs 13,999 for the 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage variant. While it shares the same 5.99 inches display (and Full HD+ resolution) and the 4,000mAh battery with the Redmi Note 5, the differences come from the processor and the camera.

The Note 5 Pro gets the horsepower from the Snapdragon 636 processor which is coupled with either 4 GB RAM (and 64 GB storage) or 6 GB RAM (and 64 GB storage). Apparently, this is also the global launch of the Snapdragon 636 processor – Qualcomm’s newest mid-range processor based on the 14nm process. It has a Kryo architecture for improved performance and battery efficiency. The GPU is the Adreno 509. Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro stands to deliver better gaming performance than the Redmi Note 5.

Coming to the camera, the Pro has gone for an iPhone X like setup at the back with a dual camera stacked vertically along with a dual LED flash. The primary lens is a 12 megapixel one (f2.2 aperture) while the secondary lens is a 5 megapixel unit (f2.0 aperture). Like its sibling, it has PDAF, HDR and panorama. On the front, there’s a humongous 20 megapixel camera with an aperture of f2.0 which is supposed to capture impressive selfies.

Prices of both phones are:
