Xiaomi Mi A1 vs Lenovo K8 Note vs Moto G5S Plus – Mass Performance and Battery Comparison

0 12,784

The past few weeks have seen a lot of mid-range smartphones being launched in the market. Three of these – Xiaomi Mi A1, Lenovo K8 Note and Moto G5S Plus – stand out in particular, as they all offer amazing specs and great overall performance for their prices.

Our readers have been asking us to compare these three smartphones with each other for quite some time, so we did just that to see how they compare.

But before we get to that, let’s go over the major hardware specs of all the three smartphones. While Xiaomi Mi A1 and Moto G5S Plus are each powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC with Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB of RAM, Lenovo K8 Note packs in a 2.3GHz deca-core Helio X23 chipset, along with Mali-T880 MP4 GPU and 3GB of RAM.

All these smartphones are priced under Rs 16,000. But which one should you spend your money on? Read on to find out.

Benchmark scores (using Geekbench 4)

Note: We used 3DMark initially, but had to switch to Geekbench 4 due to rapid fluctuations in Lenovo K8 Note’s score.

Here’s how the three smartphones fared when tested via Geekbench 4.

Performance, Graphics and Speed Test

As seen above, Xiaomi Mi A1 and Moto G5S Plus got almost similar scores on Geekbench 4. On the other hand, Lenovo K8 Note scored double in single-core performance and almost similarly in multi-core performance, when compared to the other two smartphones. Going just by these numbers, one would assume that the K8 Note performs better than the Mi A1 and the G5S Plus. And so we decided to see if that’s indeed the case.

All three smartphones handle multi-tasking without any problems, but Lenovo K8 Note performs slightly better. We ran more than 12 apps (including 4 heavy ones) and found switching between them randomly to be fairly easy on the K8 Note.

This isn’t the case with the Mi A1 and the G5S Plus, as both smartphones lag a little when switching between heavy apps. That said, they still perform better than majority of other smartphones available in the same segment.

While the K8 Note wins in the multitasking department, the Mi A1 and the G5S Plus are better when it comes to graphics performance. Thanks to their Adreno 506 GPUs, the two smartphones fared slightly better in our testing when playing heavy titles like won in multi-tasking, the Mi A1 and Moto G5s Plus took a lead in graphics Asphalt 8: Airborne, N.O.V.A. Legacy, Modern Combat 5: Blackout, Implosion and Riptide GP: Renegade.

Finally, a word about speed test. During our testing, Lenovo K8 Note, as expected, performed better than Xiaomi Mi A1 and Moto G5S Plus. We found app launching and switching speeds to be a bit better on the K8 Note.

Heating and Battery consumption

For our testing, we played graphics-rich games and switched continuously between apps for about 15 minutes on each of the three smartphones. Since all three handsets have full full metal unibody design, they start heating up within just 10 minutes of gaming. Here are the figures, as recorded by us:

Note: All figures in Celsius

Smartphone Temperature (Before Gaming) Temperature (After Gaming) Rise in Temperature
Xiaomi Mi A1 28.6 degrees 38.1 degrees 9.5 degrees
Moto G5s Plus 30.1 degrees 39.9 degrees 9.8 degrees
Lenovo K8 Note 28.8 degrees 39.6 degrees 10.8 degrees

One thing worth mentioning is that almost all three smartphones get a little unresponsive when they heat up too much. So while they are probably not the best for hardcore mobile gamers, they’ll work just fine for casual users.

Talking about battery consumption, all these smartphones consumed almost similar amount of battery during our 15-minute test run. The battery levels on Lenovo K8 Note and Moto G5S Plus dipped 7% each, whereas Xiaomi Mi A1 witnessed an 8% drop in battery life. Judging from these, the three smartphones will last around 3.5 hours with continuous gaming.

Conclusion

While it is quite hard to name a conclusive winner among the three smartphones, we can say that Lenovo K8 Note is slightly ahead of its two rivals when it comes to multitasking. But as far graphics performance is concerned, Xiaomi Mi A1 and Moto G5S Plus are definitely better than Lenovo’s offering.

So which one you should go for essentially depends on what you’re going to do with your smartphone. If you’re a heavy multitasker who’s always jumping between apps, go for Lenovo K8 Note. On the other hand, if you spend a lot of time gaming on your smartphone and don’t really care about the mildly-slow multitasking performance, both Xiaomi Mi A1 and Moto G5S Plus are great choices.

Note: We have already compared the Mi A1 separately with the G5S Plus and K8 Note in detail. You can read more about our findings here and here.
