Warning: WhatsApp Limits Message Forwarding to Tackle Fraudulent Message

1 344

In an effort to tackle misinformation and other fake news, WhatsApp has officially announced that it is limiting message forwarding feature. Plus, the giant instant messenger has already labelled the forwarded message. Now if you forward a message, “forward” tag can be seen above the message.

Talking about restriction, WhatsApp has started testing this limitation feature which will limit the number of people or group you can send a forwarded message to. What’s interesting is that Indians can only forward 5 messages whereas the rest of world can 20. This shows how Indians are blindly following and reacting over the fake news.

WhatsApp has also said in the blog post that, “Indians forward more messages, photos and videos than any other country in the world”. Additionally, the company is also removing “quick forward” feature that can be seen on the right of any media in the app. This will bring back the era when we were needed to download the media and then upload it in order to send it to someone, making it a lengthy process so that people could think before forwarding.

Oh, one more thing. According to a report from Economic Times, WhatsApp will also be working closely with the Election Commission of India in order to verify the fraudulent messages during the 2019 Elections. This has already been done in Mexico earlier.
