Technology advances at such a fast pace that a lot can happen in just a day, let alone a year. This is especially true in case of today’s smartphone industry, which sees newer and increasingly powerful mobile devices getting launched in the market on a near daily basis.
A lot of smartphones made their way into the Indian smartphone market this year, ranging from budget phones to ultra high-end flagships. But even though it’s easy to label some of them as ‘best’ and others as ‘worst’, the fact remains that to be truly a ‘value-for-money’ proposition, a smartphone (regardless of its feature set and price tag) needs to tick a lot of boxes.
As we bid adieu to 2017, here are Gadget2Buy’s picks for this year’s top 5 value for money smartphones.
Note: The prices mentioned against the entries in this listing are as of December 22, 2017. These are subject to change.
1. Xiaomi Mi A1 | Rs 12,999
Xiaomi’s smartphones have always been about offering users best value for their money, and the Mi A1 is the continuation of that. Being an ‘Android One’ device, it’s Xiaomi’s first smartphone to run stock Android out-of-the-box, instead of the heavily-tweaked MIUI OS skin. This not only means smoother software experience for users, but also faster updates directly from Google.
Priced at just Rs 12,999, the Mi A1 excels in terms of specifications too. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM. The dual-SIM, 4G VoLTE-capable smartphone comes with a dual-camera setup at the back, complete with ‘portrait mode’ goodness. Other features include an IR blaster and a USB Type-C port.
2. Moto G5S Plus | Rs 15,999
Motorola already had a great start this year, when it launched the Moto G5 Plus. But just a few months after that, the Lenovo-owned company launched an even better upgrade – Moto G5S Plus. Currently the #1 best-selling smartphone on Amazon India, the G5S Plus is indeed worthy of that top spot.
Bearing a price tag of Rs 15,999, the value-for-money Moto G5S Plus has an all-metal construction and comes with a dual-camera (13MP+13MP, f/2.0) setup at the back. Powering the smartphone is Qualcomm’s energy-efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset, helped by 4GB of RAM. The software experience is 99% stock Android-like, with minor useful tweaks sprinkled here and there. There’s also a 3,000mAh battery with fast-charging support.
3. Honor 6X | Starts at Rs 9,999
Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has been enjoying quite some success in the Indian sub-continent, thanks to its ever-expanding portfolio of smartphones that offer incredible value-for-money. And one such handset is the Honor 6X.
What makes it an even better deal is the price cut it recieved recently after the launch of its successor – Honor 7X. Now available at a starting price of just Rs 9,999, the Honor 6X is powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 655 SoC, paired with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage. The smartphone has already recieved the Android Nougat (with Huawei’s EMUI 5.0 skin on top) update, and is in line to get Android Oreo too. It has a dual-camera setup at the back, along with a fingerprint sensor that supports numerous handy gestures. A 3,340mAh battery keeps things going.
4. OnePlus 5T | Starts at Rs 32,999
Despite being just a four-year-old company, OnePlus has built an incredibly loyal fanbase for itself. Not just that, its smartphone launches are hotly-anticipated. And it’s because of the Chinese manufacturer’s line-up of ‘flagship killer’ smartphones, with the latest being OnePlus 5T.
An incremental update to OnePlus 5 (which itself was launched earlier this year), the recently-introduced OnePlus 5T has just about everything one would expect from a 2017 flagship. Powered by Qualcomm’s top-shelf (as of now) Snapdragon 835 SoC, paired with an insane 6GB/8GB of RAM, the 5T is blazing-fast. It has a dual-camera (16MP+20MP, f/1.7) setup at the back, which allows ‘portrait mode’ photography. Lastly, the awesome ‘Dash Charge’ technology allows the smartphone’s 3,300mAh battery to be juiced up in no time. The price is an extremely-competitive Rs 32,999 (for the 6GB RAM/64GB version).
5. LG G6 | Rs 32,990
They might not enjoy the same level of popularity as some of their competitors, but LG’s smartphones pack in some astounding features for the asking price. And the G6 is no exception.
Due to the recent launch of LG V30 in India, the chaebol’s first flagship of 2017 – G6 – has seen some (further) drop in its price. Currently available at just Rs 32,990, LG G6 offers a ton of goodness. The smartphone’s highlight is its 5.7-inch ‘FullVision’ display, which has an 18:9 aspect ratio, and is both DolbyVision and HDR10 compliant. With IP68 certification and MIL-STD-810G compliance, the G6 is ready for everything. Even though it’s powered by the barely-old Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC, the smartphone is more than capable of comfortably holding its own for the next two to three years. The built-in Quad-DAC ensures great audio output. The G6’s dual-camera setup includes one wide-angle and one telephoto lens, allowing more content to fit in each shot.
