0 14,060

It’s been almost one month since Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 Pro. With some noticeable upgrade like dual camera, processor, display and security options, the handset is claimed by Xiaomi to be the next best all-rounder smartphone after Redmi Note 4. In reality, the handset couldn’t beat Honor 7X in terms of camera. You can read our previous article “Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Honor 7X camera comparison in detail” for more information.

Anyway, as the handset couldn’t beat Honor 7X, we are now putting it against new Nokia 6 (2018) in a comprehensive camera comparison. One thing I would like to mention that the new Nokia 6 also comes with an upgraded camera, though it has a single rear camera. So let’s find out if the Redmi Note 5 Pro is able to beat Nokia 6.

Before we hit the road, let’s have a look on the camera specs of both handsets.

DAYLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Daylight photos taken from both handsets look very similar. It was very hard to find the distinguishable difference between them, so I zoomed them to 100 percent.

Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Nokia 6 (2018)

After zooming in, I did find some difference. For example, the Nokia 6 is better than the Redmi Note 5 Pro in terms of capturing realistic colors and better details, however, marginally.

The dark part of the image looks brighter on the Nokia 6 than those on Redmi Note 5 Pro. See the centre of that plant (above). This section is won (marginally) by Nokia 6 (2018) but I would like to mention that you won’t find distinguishable different in every photo.

HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE or HDR PHOTOGRAPHY

I was hoping that the Redmi Note 5 Pro would do better when HDR is turned on however, it didn’t happen. The handset does improve details of a photo with better details and color accuracy but it also makes it darker than non-HDR images.

The Nokia 6, on the other hand, did a good job. The handset produced the very good image with ample amount of details with realistic colors. HDR photos taken from Nokia 6 (2018) is brighter and sharper than those on Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Much like the previous section, Nokia 6 (2018) beats the Redmi Note 5 Pro but I would like to mention again that you won’t find distinguishable different in every photo.

BOKEH or DEPTH OF FIELD

Photos with a depth of field effect look very good, giving the feel of DSLR-produced images. So how do these two perform when it comes to bokeh effect? Well, let’s find out.

Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Nokia 6 (2018) Bokeh Effect

As you can see above, samples taken from both handsets look good but if you look closely then you can see that the Redmi Note 5 Pro is a bit better in terms of keeping the primary object (the branch of the plant) in focus. Zooming in reveals that Nokia 6 has only kept some part of the primary object in focus. However, color accuracy is better on the Nokia 6.

No see the second image above, they look same again but zooming in reveals some difference. This time, as the object is small, both handsets have managed to blur the background effectively while keeping the primary object (flower) in focus. But again, the color accuracy is better on Nokia 6.

In this section, you need to decide. If you are willing to ignore some focusing errors but prefer natural colors, Nokia 6 is for you. Else, go for Redmi Note 5 Pro.

LOWLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

While the Nokia 6 (2018) was better in terms of daylight photography, the Redmi 5 Pro is takes a lead in low light section.

Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Nokia 6 (2018) Lowlight

The new Xiaomi-branded smartphone performs better than the Nokia 6 (2018). Whether we talk about capturing details or colors, the handset leaves Nokia 6 behind with flying colors.

Nokia 6 (2018) vs Redmi Note 5 Pro Lowlight

The Nokia 6 lacks saturation when it comes to lowlight photography. Image look brighter than Redmi Note 5 Pro but when you zoom in, you will see much noise. This section goes in the favor or Redmi Note 5 Pro.

LOWLIGHT HDR

Turning on HDR mode does bring changes and makes image better than non-HDR images on Nokia, but these changes are no way better than the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Samples photos from Nokia 6 look brighter but it lacks color saturation and details. Zooming in reveals noise and overexposure of bright part.

Nokia 6 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro lowlight hdr images

Samples photos from Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, look a bit darker than the Nokia 6 but it has better details, sharpness and color accuracy. Much like the previous section, the Redmi Note 5 defeats Nokia 6.

SELFIE

A camera comparison can never be completed without selfie camera test, especially when the device comes with 20 megapixels sensor.

Nokia 6 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro selfie camera

As you can see above, selfie taken from Redmi Note 5 Pro looks brighter than that of Nokia 6. However, zooming in reveals that the Nokia 6 captures better details with good color accuracy than that of Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Same is the case with beauty mode too (see the sample above). Redmi Note 5 Pro uses some kind of whitish layer to whiten the entire image whereas the Nokia 6 goes for natural colors with the little bit of improvement on skin tone.

In this section, you need to decide again whether you want a natural photo or a beautified one.

OUR VERDICT

While the Nokia 6 wins in daylight photos, the Redmi Note 5 Pro takes a lead in lowlight photography. But as Nokia 6 wins marginally in daylight photos, our vote for winner goes with Redmi Note 5 Pro. Another favouring point behind deciding Redmi Note 5 Pro winner is that I wasn’t always able to find any distinguishable difference between these two in daylight or daylight HDR images.

Further, daylight images generally look good on any handset. What’s often challenging is lowlight photography where Redmi Note 5 Pro performed better than Nokia 6.
