0 1,185

Oppo’s smartphones are generally above ₹15,000 if you are looking for the decent specifications. Xiaomi, on the other hand, has been working on very thin margin and that’s why its products are insanely cheap. Technically Xiaomi is dominating low-end and mid-range segment of India but not anymore. Oppo has launched its new sub-brand called RealMe and the very first device is already launched in India – the RealMe 1.

The RealMe 1 has better on-paper specifications compared to Redmi Note 5 but as you know, we don’t care about written specs and test the real performance. In this article, we are going to put the RealMe 1 against Redmi Note 5 and see which one is really better. Before we start, have a look on their specifications. One more thing, Oppo RealMe 1’s starting price is ₹8,990 whereas the starting price of Redmi Note 5 is ₹9,999.

Redmi Note 5 vs RealMe 1

Design and Build Quality

  • While Redmi Note 5 has front glass panel and aluminum back panel with plastic top and bottom, the RealMe 1 is entirely made of glass. The back glass panel is customized with crystal design, giving it an awesome look.
  • Both smartphones’ display size is almost same but the RealMe 1 is has less bottom bezel than Redmi Note 5.
  • Both smartphones’ feel big in hands, can’t be operated single-handedly and people with small palm might face problems while reaching every corner of the screen.
  • To keep the design minimal, Oppo has placed everything (ex. speaker, 3.5 audio jack and USB) at the bottom whereas the 3.5mm audio jack is placed at the top on Redmi Note 5.

In this section the choice is yours whether you want a durable metallic body or a beautiful looking glass design. Personally, I would go with the RealMe 1.RealMe 1 vs Redmi Note 5 design

Display, UI and OS

  • Both smartphones’ display size is almost similar and they use similar display panels and resolution.
  • Both smartphones’ display is good for those who love to watch videos on their phones. It’s big and full HD+. So watching videos is fun.
  • As they both have front glass panel, they do reflect under direct sunlight despite of setting the brightness at maximum.
  • Color accuracy and sharpness on both handsets is identical.
  • While the Redmi Note 5 runs on Android 7.1, the RealMe 1 comes with 8.1 Oreo.
  • They both use custom skin which means they have several features. However, their custom skin doesn’t lag.

In this section, both have managed to impress us equally.

Performance and Gaming

  • Starting with benchmark, the Oppo RealMe 1’s score is far better than the Redmi Note 5. On 3DMark, it scored more than double of what Redmi Note 5 scored. On GeekBench too, it scored almost double points than what the latter has scored on single core. On dual-core, it is ahead of Redmi Note 5 with nearly 500 points.
  • Coming to the real performance, both handsets are equally good when it comes to normal or moderate usage. Neither they lag nor restart the applications while multi-tasking. Normal social apps like WhatsApp, media apps like YouTube and gaming apps like Subway Surfers work just fine.
  • But yes, the RealMe 1 does take a lead when it comes to heavy gaming. I played PUBG Mobile, Gangster Vegas – the Mafia Game, Hopeless Land and Shadow Fight 3. While both handsets managed to run the Shadow Fight 3 and Hopeless Land smoothly, I saw random stutters and lag on PUBG Mobile and Gangster Vegas. On the other hand, RealMe 1 handled all four games smoothly.
  • Same is the case with graphics performance. The Redmi Note 5 managed to run the Shadow Fight 3 and Hopeless Land properly but started lagging while rendering graphics of PUBG Mobile and Gangster Vegas. Graphics stutter was seen more often on PUBG Mobile. The RealMe 1, on the other hand, handled the graphics smoothly.
  • One thing they have in common that they start heating after 15 minutes of gaming. 1 hour of gaming brings several degrees of rise in temperature.

In this section, the RealMe 1 gets the crown.

Camera

  • Starting with daylight, it was really hard tell the difference between their sample photos. So I zoomed in and found that both have nearly similar amount of details but the Redmi Note 5 takes a lead in terms of sharpness. Color accuracy is also a bit better on Redmi.
  • Turning on HDR mode does help RealMe 1 to gain sharpness however, the color accuracy remains same. On the other hand, this feature brings more sharpness and better color accuracy on Redmi Note 5.
  • Boke mode is more or less similar on both handsets. I couldn’t find any distinguishable difference between them. Both have managed to effectively blur the background while keeping primary object in focus with sharp edges.
  • One more thing, the RealMe 1 comes with 2X zoom which works fine. I am not comparing it as the Redmi Note 5 doesn’t have it. In the image gallery below.
  • Until now, the Redmi Note has been dominating the camera section (marginally) but not anymore. The lowlight performance of RealMe 1 seems to be better. It has better sharpness, color accuracy and details than Redmi Note 5.
  • Same is the case with HDR mode which just whitens the photos of Redmi Note 5. It also overexposes the light part. The RealMe 1, on the other hand, maintains sharpness, details and color accuracy. Plus, it doesn’t overexposes the light part.
  • In terms of selfies, they are poles apart. While the RealMe 1 applies a white layer on each photos to whiten it, the Redmi Note 5 goes with natural colors.
  • Even in the beauty mode, the Redmi Note 5 manages to maintain natural facial contours. The RealMe 1, on the other hand, wipes out natural contours and heavily beautifies it. I used AI beautification of RealMe. The normal beauty mode is so extreme that I didn’t want to use it.

In this section, I would vote RealMe 1 because the Redmi Note 5 is just marginally better in daylight condition. In lowlight, the RealMe leaves the Redmi Note 5 behind with flying colors.

Battery

  • While the RealMe 1 has 3,410 mAh battery, the Redmi Note 5 comes with a bigger 4,000 mAh unit.
  • As the power is extra, the Redmi Note 5 takes a lead. It can last 1 and a half day on a single charge when used normally. The RealMe 1, on the other hand, wouldn’t last more than a day (data speculated according to their 2 hour performance).
  • During moderate usage, the Note 5 and RealMe 1 last around 19-20 and 14-15 hours respectively (data speculated according to their 2 hour performance).
  • During heavy usage, the Redmi Note 5 lasts around 7 hours whereas the RealMe 1 stays alive for around 5 hours (data speculated according to their 1 hour performance).

In this section, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is the winner.

Our Verdict

This comparison has been really tough. Both smartphones have very good specifications and offer good performance. Until now, the Redmi Note 5 has been the best choice for this range but now RealMe1 is the new king.

In this comparison, both smartphones have been equally good when we talked about design, UI, OS and display. But when we talked about camera and performance, the RealMe 1 has left the Redmi Note 5 behind. So, if your budget is around ₹9,000; the RealMe 1 should be your choice.
