0 1,979

OnePlus 6 and Zenfone 5Z, both smartphones are the very good choice if you don’t want to spend too much money on a phone. They are available in an upper mid-range segment and offer high-end flagship-grade features. Heck, the design and build quality of these two handsets are even premium.

The OnePlus 6 costs ₹34,999 whereas the latter comes with a price tag of ₹29,999. They offer nearly similar features and we have already put them against each other in a comprehensive overall comparison. But, as several people have been asking for the detailed camera comparison, here is what we have found during our test period.

OnePlus 6 vs Zenfone 5Z

Daylight Photography

Samples taken from both smartphone during daylight condition look identical, however, when zoomed in, things are different. The Zenfone 5Z appears to be better in terms of photo quality, colors and details.

I was also checking the corners of these samples and found that they are distorted. If you look closely, you will find less details and grains. The Zenfone 5Z, on the other hand, manages to maintain the focus on the corner too. It looks sharp and detailed.

Another interesting thing about the Zenfone 5Z is its color reproduction. As the camera uses AI features by default, it brings a little bit of extra saturation for better color appearance. The OnePlus 6, on the other hand, captures nearly realistic looking colors. In this section, the winner is Zenfone 5Z.

Daylight HDR

Turning on HDR mode does help both smartphones and samples taken from both smartphones look good. However, deciding a winner has been tough as they perform better than each other depending on the lighting situation and scenery. Look at the sample below:

In the sample above, the OnePlus appears to be better in terms of colors and details. The Zenfone 5Z, on the other hand, uses AI and optimizes color according to the scene. But if you look at the sample given below, the Zenfone 5Z appears to be better.

So, to eliminate the confusion, I took several HDR photos and found that the Zenfone 5Z has been better than the OnePlus 6 in different lighting condition. Much like the previous section, the Zenfone 5Z defeats OnePlus 6.

The depth of Field or BOKEH Effect

OnePlus’ 20MP secondary lens of its dual rear camera setup is a depth sensor which means it is there just to create the depth effect. On the other hand, Zenfone’s 8MP secondary lens of its dual rear camera setup is a 120-degrees wide-angle lens. And that’s the reason OnePlus’ bokeh effect samples look a bit better than the Zenfone 5Z.

If you look at the samples given above, you won’t find any difference. They look identical until you zoom in. Zooming in reveals that the OnePlus 6 is slightly better in terms of details and keeping the edges in focus. Rest, the color accuracy and sharpness on both handsets are identical. In this section, the OnePlus 6 is the winner (marginally).

Lowlight Photos

Coming to the low light condition, the Zenfone 5Z, once again, does a slightly better job than the OnePlus 6. Though they look nearly identical at first, zooming in reveals so much about the photo quality. Have a look at the sample below:

Zenfone 5Z vs OnePlus 6 lowlight

As you can see above, they are looking identical. But when I zoomed in, I found that the Zenfone appears to be better than the OnePlus 6 in terms of details, white balance, sharpness and color saturation. Look at the zoomed in part of the photo below:

As you can see, the OnePlus couldn’t manage to capture proper details. Instead, it has over-sharpened the leaves of those plants as well as the text is written on the notice board. The Zenfone, on the other hand, has managed to capture details nicely. In this section, the Zenfone wins.

Lowlight HDR

Much like the daylight condition, the HDR mode helps in low light condition too. The OnePlus 6 now captures better details however, it is still not better than the Zenfone 5Z. Look at the sample below:

ASUS Zenfone 5Z vs OnePlus 6

As you can see above, the image from OnePlus 6 now looks better. However, it has become darker. The photo from Zenfone, on the other hand, looks brighter and better. To distinguish more difference, I zoomed in. See the zoomed image below:

As you can see, the details on OnePlus 6 is now better when compared to the non-HDR image however, it is over-sharpened and these improvements don’t make it better than the Zenfone. Zoomed in the photo from Zenfone has better details, white balance and sharpness. Much like the previous section, the Zenfone 5Z gets the crown.

Selfie

In terms of the selfie, you will need to decide for yourself. The OnePlus 6 captures better details, however; it applies some kind of whitish layer on the selfies. The Zenfone 5Z, on the other hand, goes with the natural appearance. It doesn’t modify anything and produces photos with natural colors. See the sample below:

Coming to the beauty mode, the OnePlus 6 does whitening and smoothening while enhancing the sharpness. The Zenfone 5Z, on the other hand, comes with a dedicated “selfie master” application for selfie lovers. You can select the beauty level from 1 to 10. There are more than 15 filters that you can apply after clicking the photo. See the photo below:

Apart from all this, the Zenfone 5Z comes with ZeniMoji – an iPhone like face emoji feature. Using this feature, you can create your own emoji and then share on any social network.

In this section, the decision is yours but keep in mind that Zenfone 5Z comes with tons of feature for selfie lovers.

Our Verdict

Both the OnePlus 6 and Zenfone 5Z carry very good camera setup and they have competed very well with each other. While the Zenfone is a bit better than the OnePlus in terms of daylight and lowlight performance, the OnePlus 6 has been closely following the Zenfone. Even it was better at some points. But eventually, our vote for winner goes to the Zenfone 5Z.

One of the most important reasons to go for the Zenfone 5Z is its 8MP secondary lens. The secondary sensor of Zenfone’s dual rear camera setup is a wide-angle lens which you can use to capture a wider photo than the normal ones. The secondary lens of dual camera setup on most of the smartphones including OnePlus 6 is just for calculating the depth and cannot be used manually.

Another interesting reason to go for the Zenfone 5Z is its price. It has been priced very aggressively. It is ₹5,000 cheaper than the OnePlus 6 which costs ₹34,999. In emerging markets like India, this is also one of the most important reasons to choose the Zenfone 5Z.
