Nokia, under its new parent HMD Global is going to launch its Android offerings in the country soon. The range starts from the Nokia 3, which is expected to be priced around Rs. 10,000 and goes all the way up to roughly Rs. 16,000 with the Nokia 6. While we’re still some away from the launch, we already managed to get our hands on brand’s most loaded smartphone, the Nokia 6. As usual, the question in most consumer’s mind would be whether the device can match up to the strong competition, and that’s why we bring to you a comparison: Nokia 6 vs Redmi Note 4.
It goes without saying that Nokia was once an undisputed king of the mobile industry for more than a decade, while Xiaomi is a newcomer which has successfully won millions of hearts with its amazing products. So, without wasting anymore time, let’s start.
NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Nokia is known for making durable smartphones and that’s what it has done with the Nokia 6 too. We have already watched several videos – be it of Nokia 6 cracking walnuts with ease, or working smoothly even after being dropped on the floor. Made out of metal, the handset looks classy and gives a premium feel. The entire front is covered with Corning’s Gorilla Glass, making the display secure against scratches and accidental falls.
Talking about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, it also boasts tempting look. Xiaomi has minimized the size of upper and lower portion, making it smaller than all of the previous Redmi Note series phones. The 2.5D curved glass at the fascia looks beautiful. Coming to the back of the device, you will find camera along with a dual LED flash and fingerprint sensor.
Much like the Nokia 6, the Redmi Note 4 also doesn’t provide you better grip since the metal casing proves to be slippery. You would like to use some back cover for better ergonomics. But overall, both manage to impress us equally in this section.

NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | DISPLAY
Both the Nokia 6 and Redmi Note 4 have a 5.5 inch IPS LCD capacitive display with full HD resolution. The displays are crisp and sharp; and even under direct sunlight, you can use them without facing any difficulties. The color accuracy and saturation on the both devices is remarkable, and they both offer realistic colors.
Watching videos is fun, while playing games is also a pleasurable experience. I didn’t find any issue in automatic brightness. The Touch panel of both smartphones is also very responsive and accurate, which means typing on both handsets is very smooth.
Much like the previous section, both the smartphones score similarly.
NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | USER INTERFACE
Now, this is an area where both the devices are poles apart. While the Nokia 6 runs Android v7.1.1, the Redmi Note 4 runs on Android 6.0.1 with the custom MIUI.
Nokia has done slight customizations in its user interface, especially with icons. Unlike stock Android, Gallery and File Manager are separate. But overall, the device is largely stock. The smartphone also comes with several gestures like ‘press the power button twice to open camera from any screen’, direct call & answer (to answer or call, just bring the device near your ear)’, and ‘smart alert (as soon as you lift the phone, it will vibrate if it has missed calls or new messages)’, etc. Thanks to minimal additions, the UI runs smoothly and I didn’t feel any lag or stutter. Nokia 6 is also promising faster Android updates to its smartphones.
Coming to the Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi’s MIUI is a highly customized Android skin. The Redmi Note 4 comes with latest MIUI v8.1 which packs in countless features. It’s not the simplest UI out there, but it’s also not that confusing once one gets used to it. Some of its key features include three-finger screenshot – just swipe down three fingers simultaneously on the screen and it will take a screenshot. Not only this, if you want to take a screenshot of any webpage that doesn’t fit in your screen, you can choose the scroll screenshot feature, which will then start scrolling and take the screenshot of the whole page. The MIUI also has an inbuilt app lock feature, infrared remote for controlling televisions, music systems and other electronic appliances. There are countless free themes that can completely change the look and feel of your Redmi Note 4. It also has ‘Dual App’ Profile, allowing you to use two instances of apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp.
It’s difficult to pick a winner in terms of UI. It totally depends upon you – whether you like the charm of the pure Android with quicker updates or the benefits offered by the custom layer.

NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | PERFORMANCE
There is a huge difference between the technical specifications of these two devices. The Nokia 6 is powered by an octa-core processor with the clock speed of 1.4GHz, embedded into a Snapdragon 430 chipset. On the other hand, the Redmi Note 4 is powered by the Snapdragon 625 SoC, which is also an octa-core processor running at 2.0GH, embedded into a Snapdragon 625 chipset. While the Nokia 6 is available in both 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM models, the Redmi Note 4 can be purchased in 2, 3 or 4GB RAM options. It remains to be seen if HMD would launch both the variants of the Nokia 6, but we have been using the 4GB RAM model of the Nokia 6, while for the Note 4, we’ve the 3GB RAM version.
As expected, the Nokia 6 lacks in the performance department. Since I have the Chinese version, I had to go for games that don’t require Google Play sign-in. So, I tried several heavy games such as GTA: Vice City, CrashLands and Asphalt 8. While the Asphalt 8 ran fine, GTA: Vice City and CrashLands didn’t. I experienced several stutter and lags while playing these titles. Switching between games also showed some lag. Although graphics rendering was quite good.
The Redmi Note 4, on the other hand, impressed me a lot. There were no issues whatsoever playing titles like Asphalt 8, Modern Combat: Blackout and Shadowrun Dragonfall. Thanks to Adreno 504, the graphics rendering on the device is also remarkable.
Because both the Nokia 6 and Redmi Note 4 have a metal body, they started heating in about 15 and 25 minutes respectively. In about 45 to 50 minutes, both heated to a considerable level. The Nokia 6’s temperature went to 39.3 degrees, whereas Redmi Note 4’s temperature went to 39.1. (Note: we were in an air-conditioned surrounding with 25 degrees temperature, so the device’s temperature might rise in non-ac surroundings). The good thing was that none of them hanged and managed to run smoothly during normal operations.
Much like the previous section, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is the winner.
Note: For detailed performance comparison, see this post.
NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | CAMERA (PRIMARY)
The Nokia 6 features a 16 megapixels phase detection autofocus camera with f/2.0 lens aperture, whereas the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 boasts a 13 megapixels camera with dual-LED flash and f/2.0 aperture.
Daylight images taken from Nokia 6 are impressive. Colours are realistic, though it lacks sharpness. Autofocus works fine and bokeh effect is not better than the Redmi Note 4. It will also impress you when you click image using HDR. Its auto HDR capabilities managed to surprise me. Talking about low-light images, you will feel graininess and noise when you zoom in on the images. Low-light pictures aren’t as bright as I expected, but overall, it is good.
The Redmi Note 4, on the other hand, has a great camera. Offering pretty cool Bokeh effect, the camera of Redmi Note 4 produces amazing photos in any lighting conditions. Low-light images have grains, but Xiaomi’s processing makes the images seem smoother than the Nokia 6. See below for reference.
Talking about video quality, both smartphones’ video quality is limited to 1080p. In terms of the primary camera results, the Redmi Note 4 is the winner.
NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | CAMERA (SECONDARY)
Talking about the front camera, the Nokia 6 and Redmi Note 4 feature an 8- and 5 MP camera respectively, with f/2.0 lens aperture.
Images taken from Redmi Note 4’s front facing camera are good but not better than the Nokia 6, thanks to Nokia 6’s higher megapixel count and 1.12 µm pixel size. Images taken in the daylight from both the smartphones are bright and colourful. And, none of them produces oversaturated pictures.
Low-light images taken from Nokia 6 are also better than the Redmi Note 4. When I zoomed in, I noticed considerable amount of noise in the images taken from Redmi Note 4, whereas there was less noise in Nokia’s smartphone.
Much like the main camera, both smartphones’ front facing camera can record 1080 pixel videos. As far as the selfie camera is concerned, the Nokia 6 is a better buy.

NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | BATTERY
The Nokia 6 packs a 3,000 mAh Li-ion battery whereas the Redmi Note 4 comes with a bigger 4,100 mAh Li-Polymer battery.
Talking about the Nokia 6 first, its battery doesn’t last long if you’re playing games. So, it’s a big NO for gamers. During normal usage, the handset lasts for around a day. Talking about the Redmi Note 4, its battery is a real friend. It easily lasts longer than the Nokia 6. Whether you’re playing heavy games or watching movies, its battery won’t leave you alone. See the battery consumption graph below:
There is a huge difference between charging time, though. The Nokia 6 (comes with Fast Charging technology) takes almost 1.5 hours to completely charge the battery; whereas the Redmi Note 4 takes more than 2 hours to juice up its battery. Well, it has a bigger battery so we can expect it to take time. But what’s unfortunate is it that it doesn’t have the fast charging technology. See the exact charging time for your reference, below:
- 30 Minutes: 45% (Nokia 6) | 22% (Redmi Note 4)
- 60 Minutes: 75% (Nokia 6) | 45% (Redmi Note 4)
- 90 Minutes: 100% (Nokia 6) | 76% (Redmi Note 4)
In terms of usage, the Redmi Note 4 wins and in terms of charging; Nokia 6 wins. So it depends, if you want a long-lasting phone or the one that can charge faster.
NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | SOUND QUALITY
While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 offers an average sound output, the Nokia 6 goes a step ahead. Thanks to the support for Dolby surround sound with its dual speakers, the Nokia offers a loud and crisp sound.
The Redmi Note 4 doesn’t come with bundled earphone whereas Nokia 6 does; however, its earphones are average. So, for a better music experience, you should go for better-quality earphones.
In this section, the crown easily goes to the Nokia 6.
NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | FINGERPRINT SENSOR
Fingerprint readers are now available on most budget smartphones, and the Nokia 6 and Redmi Note 4 are no different. The Nokia 6 has it at the front (embedded into ‘home’ key, whereas it lies on the back of the Redmi Note 4. In terms of accuracy, both the handsets perform equally; while in terms of quickness, Nokia 6 takes a lead. The phones also support 360-degree recognition, allowing you to unlock the phone with your finger in any orientation.
In this section, Nokia 6 wins the crown.

NOKIA 6 VS REDMI NOTE 4 | CONCLUSION
Both the Nokia 6 and Redmi Note 4 can prove to be a good choice but it depends on your budget. What’s disappointing about Nokia 6 is despite having a mid-range price tag, it comes with a low-end processor. That said, it’s well-optimized and will offer a smooth experience. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 on the other hand, comes with super fine specifications in its price range. So, if you are a Nokia fan, you can surely wait for the Nokia 6 to launch, but if you are looking for an all-rounder phone, then the Redmi Note 4 is the one to go for.
