HMD Global, owner of Nokia, has launched the Nokia 1 smartphone in India at a price of Rs 5,499. The interesting aspect about the phone is that it runs the Go Edition of Google’s latest Android Oreo operating system. Which means, it is a lighter version of the normal Android Oreo and uses less memory and power to operate.

Furthermore, all apps on the Android Oreo 8.1 Go Edition are also the Go Edition versions of their respective normal apps. All Google services like the Gmail, Assistant, Search, Maps and YouTube are optimized accordingly to be more power efficient. An example this is the Chrome Data Saver feature, which allows users to save up to 60% of their mobile data.

Nokia 1 Go Edition

Regarding specifications, Nokia 1 comes across as a pretty basic smartphone at best. Besides Android Oreo (Go Edition), the phone is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core chipset with a clock speed of 1.1 GHz. It is coupled with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage (expandable). The display unit is quite outdated by today’s standards – an FWVGA IPS panel measuring 4.5 inches throwing a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The main camera is a 5 MP unit with an LED flash while the front camera is a 2 MP unit. Additionally, the phone comes with a 3.5 mm audio jack, a MicroUSB port and a 2,150mAh battery.

This is the first Nokia with a Go Edition Android operating system. The phone will be available for purchase from March 28.
