The government operated MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) has released a new prepaid recharge pack to counter Jio. The pack offers a total of 2 GB 2G/ 3G data, unlimited voice calls (local and STD), and 100 SMS messages for a period of one month. After the consumption of free data benefit, data will be charged at 2p/10KB.
The MTNL pack only offers 2G or 3G data since the telecom operator is yet to commence 4G operations in the country.
Since MTNL operates only in the Delhi and Mumbai telecom circles, the free calling and SMS benefits will only be valid in these two cities. The remaining circles are managed by yet another state-owned telecom operator which is BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited).
For comparison, Jio also offers Rs. 98 recharge pack that has same data benefits but at 4G speeds, and comes with unlimited voice calling (local, STD, and roaming), 100 SMS messages, and the complimentary subscription to Jio’s apps. However, this pack does not come with unlimited data access and standard charges apply after the monthly limits of 2 GB expires.
