Huawei’s Swanky Mate RS Porsche Design Has Two Fingerprint Sensors, Three Cameras
And it costs a bomb! But that's not exactly surprising, right?
Huawei recently unveiled its P20 and P20 Pro flagship smartphones, at an event in Paris, France. Set to headline the Chinese technology giant’s mobile line-up in 2018, the two smartphones are every bit as premium as one would expect. However, they pale in comparison to a third smartphone that Huawei launched alongside them.
Dubbed Mate RS Porsche Design, this beast is in a whole different league. As the words ‘Porsche Design’ in its name make it aptly clear, Huawei Mate RS is a definitely luxurious smartphone with a first-rate design and powerful innards. But it also comes with some really interesting features.
The Mate RS Porsche Design is essentially a more premium version of the P20 Pro and as such, quite a few of its hardware specs are same as that of the P20 Pro.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about the Mate RS Porsche Design is that it comes with not one, but two fingerprint sensors. Yep, you read that right!
In addition to a standard rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design also has an under-display fingerprint sensor. All you have to do is hover your finger over the display to wake up the device, and then press the finger against the the display to unlock it. Thanks to dual fingerprint authentication made possible by two sensors, it’s possible to switch between two different virtual workspaces with just a touch.
Powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 970 SoC (with an octa-core CPU and Mali-G72 MP12 GPU), the Mate RS Porsche Design has 6GB of RAM. That said, its internal storage is 256GB or 512GB, as opposed to P20 Pro’s 128GB. Naturally, there’s no microSD memory expansion slot on-board.
Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design has a 6.0-inch FullHD+ AMOLED touchscreen, with a resolution of 1440×2880 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. However, there’s no notch. Running Android 8.1 Oreo (with EMUI 8.0 baked on top), the smartphone has all modern connectivity options, but no 3.5mm audio port. It’s powered by a 4,000mAh battery with support for fast charging. Wireless charging and stereo speakers are also included in the mix.
As far as the cameras go, Mate RS Porsche Design is the same as P20 Pro. It has a triple-camera system at the back. It includes a 40MP (f/1.8 with OIS) unit, a 20MP (f/1.6) unit, and an 8MP (f/2.4) unit. Enhanced by Leica optics, the camera system is capable of achieving 3x optical zoom, and is augmented by phase detection and laser autofocus, as well as two-tone dual-LED flash. There’s also a 24MP front-facing shooter for selfies.
Naturally, you can’t expect a smartphone as loaded as this to come cheap. So if you feel like getting a Mate RS Porsche Design, you’d have to shell out an insane $2,100 (~ INR 1,36,700) to $2,600 (~ INR 1,69,250), depending on whether you want the 256GB variant or the 512GB version.
