Smartwatches have become an essential companion accessory for our smartphones these days. Not only can they tell the time, but perform several other functions like displaying text messages (and other notifications), handling calls and searching the web. Then there are smart bands (also called fitness bands), which are primarily used for monitoring personal health data and are somewhat limited in functionality than smartwatches.

In our search for budget smartwatches and smartbands, we came across the Xiaomi Amazefit and the Xiaomi Mi Band 2.

The Amazefit is yet to be launched in India and we got the Chinese version of the smartwatch. If it’s launched in India, the Amazefit would probably cost between Rs 3,500 to 4,000. The Mi Band 2, on the other hand, costs almost half the price of the Amazefit and is available at a price of Rs 1,999. Both wearables can be paired with smartphones using the Mi Fit Android/iOS app.

Let us begin our detailed comparison between the Xiaomi Amazefit and the Xiaomi Mi Band 2.

Build Quality

First up, let’s talk about the Amazefit. The build quality of this smartwatch is not that great. The wrist strap feels cheap and is prone to damage when exposed to heat and sharp objects. Thankfully, the strap is properly fastened with screws and doesn’t come off easily. Moreover, the number strap holes are sufficient, which means that the smartwatch can fit wrists of all sizes. The Amazefit can be charged using a USB charging adapter that comes with it.

On the other hand, the Mi Band 2 has a very sleek design, and its strap looks and feels premium. Unlike the Amazefit, the Mi Band 2’s straps are thick and thus harder to damage and wear out. Also, the strap on the Mi Band 2 is a single unit and doesn’t use any screws for fastening. Interestingly, the watch face can be removed from the entire unit. The Mi Band 2 can also be charged using a USB data cable provided with it.

Specifications

Xiaomi Amazefit features a small color touchscreen display and a Li-ion battery of 190mAh capacity. The smartwatch weighs 32g. It is also waterproof and dustproof. The wearable supports Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity. The watch strap is claimed to be made up of plastic cement, which does not feel premium.

The Mi Band 2 has a monochrome OLED display and a 70mAh Li-po battery. The smartband’s actual module weighs only 7g and the band altogether is extremely light. Mi Band 2 supports Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity and is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance. It is made up of thermoplastic elastomer and aluminium alloy.

Features

Xiaomi Amazefit offers a number useful features that can be helpful to users in a lot of scenarios. The smartwatch is capable of displaying weather status, and supports GPS and GLONASS with dual-mode positioning. It monitors the heart rate while exercising, and features a compass and a pedometer. You can also set the alarm and stopwatch using it. The Amazefit further offers several pre-installed watch faces to set on the dial. The smartwatch can be paired with any Android smartphone (running version 4.4 or above) and any iOS smartphone (running version 8 or newer).

The Mi Band 2 is a great smartband for the price it is available at. It records footsteps, heart rate and calories burnt. There is also a touch-sensitive button below the display. There are not a lot of features but the band rightly serves its purpose of a what typical smartband should do. From displaying notifications to unlocking your smartphone, the Mi Band 2 does it all.

Compatibility

Xiaomi Amazefit is compatible with Android 4.4 and above and iOS 8, as mentioned above. It can easily be operated using the companion Mi Fit Android/iOS app.

The Mi band 2 is compatible with all Xiaomi smartphones, as well as Apple devices running iOS 7 and later. That said, the smartphone unlocking feature only works with MIUI or Android 5.0 and above. Mi Band 2 can also be operated using the same Mi Fit app.

Verdict

Even though the Amazefit is yet to be launched in India, it is really a good smartwatch and offers a number of features to play around with. Considering the cheap build quality, the only concern that might strike you is the damage to strap.

Xiaomi Mi Band 2, on the other hand, offers a great build quality and justifies the price at which is available at. For just Rs 2,000, you get features like heart rate sensor, pedometer and calorie counter. It is a great smartband for someone who would love to own a minimal looking fitness tracker.
